All Sewed Up (Dj Crook 1997)

Posted by: crookone | Comments (7)

I thought I’d share this old mixtape I put out in ’97 (cassette cover art and cassette hiss included).

Just 2 turntables/mixer and this trusty old Tascam. The story behind the cover art was that I was thinking of using a pic of an old sweat shop factory with mad sewing machines, but then I was like…lemme take this to a different level. So I called my boy Slick and asked him if he had any flicks of someone with their head stitched up. He laughed and said “Well, I’m looking at this book right now called ‘Death Scenes’ (or something like that).” I started cracking up..Slick never ceases to amaze. So he kindly made me the cover art and didn’t DISSappoint. This mix includes various homemade remixes I did (slapping a capellas over some of my beats), a song I produced for Sac based hip hop outfit known as Socialistik as well as an older 4 track mix on side 2 that me and my old partner DTM did back in ’88.

This was an all vinyl mix put on cassette, duped and passed out in the streets with no web addy attached to it..Yeah I ain’t new to this. I hope peeps today appreciate how easy it is to slap a mix up or even an ‘mp3 playlist’ on a blog or myspace and get mad exposure/props etc.. (I know I sure do). And what’s with mixtape release parties?! Ok I’ll stop now… Here’s the track listing, enjoy!

The Holy Mountain

Posted by: FRANKDEE | Comments (4)

So.. over some drinks and some fresh off the grill portabellos, the conversation between Crook, myself and a few friends, as usual ends up on Alejandro Jodorowsky. Don’t ask me how or why, but it does. Over the years i became totally obsessed with this movie. Visually from beginning to end its straight eye candy. Sure its bizarre, and can be written off as some Hippie LSD trip shit. But Jodorowsky was definitely on some next level shit back then. He was originally supposed to do Dune! That project was intended to involve Orson Welles as the Baron, Salvador Dali as the Emperor, Mick Jagger as Feyd Rautha, Pink Floyd, and H.R. Giger to name a few. Jodorowsky claimed it was sabotaged by the major studios in Hollywood which led to David Lynch stepping in.

Crook is telling me he just copped the Jodorowsky DVD set. Pretty cool considering The Holy Mountain along with El Topo was banned in the states for over 30 years after his falling out with Allen Klien. Least now i wont have to bust out the VHS player when my stoner friends ask me to play that sick fuck of a movie i always subjected them to!  -Frank-
