DRE DAY 2010

LIKE WE ALWAYS DO ABOUT THIS TIME…..
Tonight is the Chicago DRE DAY celebration and I could not be more excited. This is a party that was started by my homie Mike the 2600 King and his amazingly talented design crew at Burlesque of North America. In addition to Chicago and the Dre Day founding city of Minneapolis, our homie Nick Hook is holding down the party in NYC. This year there are also parties in Winnipeg, Saksatoon, Austin, Philadelphia, Portland, & Tampa.
This year’s Chicago DRE DAY will smash our 2009 party and of course will incorporate DRE DAY favories like the Chronic album cover photo booth, the $20 sack pyramid game, free 40 ozs, and much more. Peep below for details.

The Marketing & Event Production firm Ground Lift Media and the Minnesota-based design collective Burlesque of North America have joined forces to present the 2010 installment of DRE DAY: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Dr. Dre. February is quickly approaching, and this will be our eighth year celebrating Andre Young and his creative contributions to the world of Hip-Hop.
It’s time to strap on your Compton hats and locs and celebrate the music and legacy of one of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time, the icon responsible for introducing the world to acts as diverse as N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C., Eminem, J.J. Fad, 50 Cent, Arabian Prince, and so many more. It’s Dre Day 2010 and everybody’s celebratin’!
This year we’re excited to present performances by Chicago’s own Psalm One, as well local Soul/Funk band The Jordan Years as they recreate classic Dr. Dre songs and the original tunes Dre sampled. DJ sets by The Comeups (Intel, Maker, Pickel), TREW, Big Once, & Kool Hersh. Live art by Jose Garibaldi & Mike Bianco. Photobooth by Camerainmyhand.com, Video by Chicago Music Project.
The Mastodon Burger

Kuma’s Corner in Chicago has consistently been rated as having the best burgers in the city. I have lived blocks away from this place for over a year now and have never made it in due to the average wait time of 2 hours to even sit down (no reservations, carry out, etc.). Every burger on the menu is named after a hard rock / metal band, which they also play in the bar / restaurant. If you are ever in Chicago and got some time to kill, check the place out: kumascorner.com
After a glance over of the menu, I was torn between getting the Iron Maiden and the Mastodon. But then once ‘Iron Tusk‘ came on I knew what the call was. A charred 10 oz. burger with BBQ Sauce, Cheddar, Thick Cut Bacon, & Frizzled Onions. GAME OVER.
The Real Sound of Chicago

So my dudes at Peabody Records have just put out a comp on BBE titled the The Real Sound of Chicago. Buy it. Its great. The CD release party is tonight at Danny’s. If you are in Chicago you should go. Here’s the review:
Chicago, A place known for its talent of musicians across many genres of music. Soul, Funk, Rock, Jazz, Blues, etc. In modern times, Chicago’s dance floors have a worldwide reputation for House Music. It’s a sound that has pretty much reached to areas all across the globe. In the Early developmental stages of the Chicago dance era (mid-late 1970’s to early 1980’s), there were scores of musicians recording dance music hoping to be the next mainstream success story. Well, for the artists on this compilation it didn’t quit turn out that way. Instead, budget problems, politics, being told, “I don’t like it”, or simply having the door slammed in their face, is what many of these artists were faced with instead. Nevertheless, the musicianship those artists possessed by far equaled or defined infinite status of what today’s market call “Good Music”. We’ve been distributing rare dance gems across the globe together now for a little over a decade. Being the music enthusiasts, that we are, 4 years ago, we opted to bring the art of record collecting to a higher level. So, while walking down the street, we decided to open a record store. Mr. Peabody Records was the name we decided on. Now, The name doesn’t quite fit 2 black guys from the South side of Chicago but according to our math, it worked, which it did. We’ve spent many years traveling various destinations, home and abroad in an effort to snare every possible unique vinyl gem we came across. We supported our massive record collecting habit by selling a wide genre of collectible vinyl globally to people of the same passion. As far as us being dance floor DJ’s, our selections gravitates towards rare and unplaced dance material from the past, with of course a few modern day exceptions. We are pretty strict in our programming so expect nothing but the best. Since the opening of our store, we’ve acquired so much more. So much so, we decided to do a specialized compilation for BBE. The first of its kind, highlighting dance floor material exclusively from the Chicago area, mid 70’s to early 80’s. This compilation is a musical insight to the black underground dance material made in Chicago before house music kicked in. We call it, The Real Sound Of Chicago.
Ever since I left St. Louis for the Windy City my taste in music changed forever. Disco and the house music it later inspired is everywhere in this city. I got to thank Mark Grusane for hipping me to many great records.
Attitude, Belief, & Determination is a track written by Martin Dumas Jr. and recorded at Curtis Mayfield’s studio. I was lucky enough to dig up. Here is a killer disco, slow burner that is featured on the compilation that I ripped from my 12″. Enjoy!
